How Do You Calculate The Food Saved?Updated 7 months ago

Your Impact: Food Saved
At Farmers Pick, your decision to rescue produce doesn’t just benefit you—it creates a ripple effect that helps reduce food waste, support farmers, and make the planet a little greener. Every time you place an order, you’re actively rescuing food that would have otherwise gone to waste.

How We Calculate It:

We calculate the amount of food saved by looking at the weight of your box. For example, if you’ve ordered a 10kg box, we estimate that around 80% of that weight is food that supermarkets would have rejected for cosmetic reasons. This means with your order, you’ve helped save around 8kg of food from a less favourable outcome—like being tossed in the bin or left to rot in fields.

It’s a small change in your grocery shopping habits, but it makes a big difference. That’s why we’re so passionate about rescuing produce—it’s about doing good for you, for our farmers, and for the world.

Why It’s Important:
Did you know that nearly a third of all food produced globally is wasted? And in Australia alone, food waste contributes millions of tonnes to landfill each year.

By choosing rescued produce, you’re playing a critical role in changing this narrative. You’re not just buying groceries—you’re making a conscious choice to reduce waste, support sustainable practices, and give a second chance to perfectly good food that otherwise might never have made it to anyone’s plate. Globally, the problem is even more alarming.

According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) (2021), a third of all food produced is lost or wasted—around 1.3 billion tonnes of food—costing the global economy close to $940 billion each year. Not only that, but up to 10% of global greenhouse gases comes from food that is produced but not eaten.

So, when you choose to rescue produce with us, you’re also helping to reduce these emissions and create a more sustainable food system. When you open your Farmers Pick box, you’re opening up a world of possibilities: saving food, supporting farmers, and helping to reduce unnecessary strain on our environment.

Now that’s something to feel good about!
